My Dad was a physical educator, high school athletic director, and co-owned a summer day camp so all year round it was sports, sports, sports. Golf was a small part of this but always just to get together with family and friends and knock the ball around.
Destined for a career in sports, I received a college degree in Sports Management at UMass Amherst (Go Minutemen!). This included an internship with the New England Patriots that was followed by a job in the Special Events department at the Boston Garden, home of the Boston Celtics and Bruins. Learning the ropes from the ground up was an incredibly valuable introduction to the sports event business.
A calling to head west brought me to Los Angeles, where after volunteering for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, I was hired to work in the press operations department. The job included working with over 9,000 media representatives from 110 countries and following the Summer Games, had a chance to be part of the editorial team that documented the unparalleled success of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Golf became my business when I was hired by the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce as Director of Communications and Special Events. Our largest yearly fundraiser was the Nissan Los Angeles Open Golf Classic, featuring the top players on the PGA TOUR. Organizing a professional golf tournament taught me amongst many things, the power of golf and business, and how it brings people together from all ages and backgrounds for an enjoyable experience. I had the privilege of conducting Tiger Wood’s first professional press conference when he played at the LA Open in 1992 as a 16-year-old amateur.
In 1994, I left the Junior Chamber and started our company, focusing on charitable and corporate golf events as well as public relations and marketing services. Our first client was Yonex, a golf club, tennis, and badminton manufacturer. Yonex Golf was represented by a young Phil Mickelson, who won his first professional golf tournament as an amateur using Yonex clubs. Working with Phil and Tiger was quite memorable! In the first year, I had 9 charitable clients and was beginning to see my passion growing for producing philanthropic events.
The charity golf tournament side of the business grew steadily over the years and has become my main focus. We have surpassed $55 million net proceeds in assisting charities through tournaments. Being a part of so many incredible tournament fundraisers and getting to know and work with so many amazing volunteers and charity staffers has been such a blessing.
To love what you do and know you are part of making a difference in the world, I can’t think of anything else I would rather do.
